Garden Grove CA History

Garden Grove's origins trace back to 1874 when it was established by Alonzo Cook. That same year saw the formation of a school district and a Methodist church, marking the beginning of its community infrastructure. Initially, Garden Grove was a quaint rural junction and agricultural hub until 1905, when the Pacific Electric Railroad arrived. This rail link was instrumental in the town's growth, attracting tourists, visitors, and new residents. The area became known for its production of oranges, walnuts, chili peppers, and later, strawberries.

The town faced a significant setback in 1933 when the Long Beach earthquake devastated much of the central business district, resulting in the death of one individual at the high school. However, the post-World War II era brought about a construction and population boom, culminating in Garden Grove's incorporation as a city in 1956, by which time it had approximately 44,000 inhabitants.

In the same year, the Orange County Plaza (later renamed The Promenade) was introduced at the intersection of Chapman and Brookhurst. Following its expansion in 1959, the plaza boasted 60 stores, including a J.C. Penney, two variety stores, and two supermarkets. It proudly claimed the title of both the largest and the first regional shopping center in Orange County.
